JKR does leave it ambiguous as she says Remus distanced himself from Lyall, which could just mean he was alive but they weren't close, or he'd died. I have a feeling he's probably meant to be dead as well, although wizards have a very long life expectancy (then again, I kind of think it's more that the long life isn't unusual, given everyone in canon seems to have died at fairly average or even early ages of "old age")... and like you said, it's fun playing with the idea of Lyall having been alive
