Notes: A snippet from a Kaleidoscope chapter I’m starting to think about writing. Takes place in March of Deathly Hallows year.


Legacy

He knew, too well, the grief that twisted her face as she stared out the window—knew that it twisted her heart as well, that it had clawed the ground from under her feet and sent her plummeting.

He would give his soul to keep such a grief from her.

But all he could do was wrap his arms around her, rest his hands on her stomach, feel little kicks and nudges that, mere hours ago, would have made them laugh for sheer joy.

“What do you think,” he murmured, brushing a kiss along her ear, “about naming him Teddy?”

As a drabble, it really twists the emotions. I'd reached the end before "mere hours ago" hit home. Aargh. As a snippet it works far too well: I want to read the rest now, though it's obviously going to be a heart-breaker!
