Summary: Remus and Tonks exchange home-made Christmas presents. OOTP
Notes: Unbeta'ed as per usual, please bear with me and my stupid mistakes :D Merry Christmas everyone!
It was late in the night when Tonks finally got off from work and was able to get to Grimmauld to meet Remus and Sirius, although the latter had already turned in by the time she got there.
“Are these safe?” Remus asked, lifting up a cookie with green, white and red candies and nuts from the brown tin jar.
“What ever do you mean, Remus? Why would I trick you?” she replied, feigning hurt.
“I don’t think Sirius has stopped feeling thirsty after tasting the cookies you made him,” he said, chuckling.
No, the strong salt liquorice drops she’d put into them hadn’t failed to make an impression. The best part was that half of the cookies were regular chocolate chip ones and you couldn’t tell them apart from the salty ones without tasting. It served Sirius right though, he was the one who had insisted the three of them exchange home-made presents, knowing she was useless at just about everything related to homemaking. It made things easier for Remus as far as finances went, but she would have preferred to buy both of them something nice.
She shrugged.
“Well, like I already told you, not all of them had the salty liquorice in them. He’s just going to have to figure out which ones to eat and which ones to chuck in the trash. But I’m not tricking you, see?” she said, taking a bite from the cookie in Remus’s hand.
The candies were filled with good quality dark chocolate, but she had thought Remus’s cookies deserved a Christmas-y twist, so she had gone for the colored candies instead of the plain brown ones.
Apparently encouraged by her enthusiasm to taste the cookies, he dared to take a bite as well. She watched in amusement as he turned his head to look at her.
“These are good, Tonks. I didn’t know you could bake,” he joked.
“Molly may have helped out with the dough, I didn’t want to ruin them,” she admitted.
He shook his head laughing.
“Then I guess it’s fair to admit that she helped me out with your cookies too. Please, taste them.”
She opened the delicate pink organza pouch he had packed her cookies in and picked up one of them. Among the dark brown there were multi-colored candy drops. Pink seemed to be the most dominant color. She broke a piece out of the cookie and put it into her mouth. The candies didn’t have chocolate in them, instead the filling tasted like fruit juice.
“These are amazing!” she exclaimed.
He gave her a shy smile.
“I’m glad you like them.”
“How did you end up choosing the candy?”
He hesitated and seemed to shrink away from her.
“You like to experiment with hair colours, so I thought I’d do the same with the candy.”
“And the pink?”
“It’s your favourite hair colour, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it is. Do you like it?”
“It’s my favorite as well,” he replied quietly, not quite looking at her.
She grinned at him.
“Wow, you put a lot of thought into this,” she replied.
“Yes, well I—“
Before he got to finish the sentence, she’d leaned out and kissed him on the cheek.
“I know they’re just cookies, but this is one of the most thoughtful presents I’ve ever been given,” she said, pulling away enough to look at him in the eye.
“Glad you think so,” he answered.
That was when she leaned into him again and this time kissed him on the lips. She hadn’t meant to be this obvious about her feelings for him, but she couldn’t help but linger. That was when she realized kissing Remus Lupin just might become her new favourite thing.
