Title: Powder Snow
Rating & Warnings: PG, none
Word Count: 546
Prompt(s): #40. Frozen
Summary: Tonks, Remus, Bill, Fleur and their children enjoy an afternoon of sledding. A little glimpse on what could've been. Post-war, AU (sadly).
Notes: This one came out of nowhere tonight after I went sledding with my sister and nephew earlier. As usual, no beta, so forgive me for all the stupid errors :)
The cold winter day was perfect for sledding, and both Fleur and I and Remus and Tonks thought it was good for the kids to have company and get rid of some excess energy.
Our 2-year-old wasn’t as much of a daredevil as the 4-year-old Teddy, so we started from the midpoint of the hill. Teddy on the other hand wasn’t satisfied with anything less than the entire hill and would’ve loved to go on his own, but hadn’t been allowed to. I was somewhat surprised to see Remus being the only one who joined the boy.
“Time for chocolat!” I heard Fleur call from the top as I set Victoire down onto her feet at the base of the hill.
“Again, daddy, again!” she demanded, tugging on my snow-covered jeans.
“No, honey, we’re going to have some hot chocolate now. We’ll go again later, I promise,” I told her. She stomped her foot and pouted, much like her mum, but eventually followed me up the hill.
The others were already holding their cups when we reached them. Teddy looked like he had downed his with one go and was now sporting a chocolate mustache.
“Can we go again, daddy?” asked Teddy, looking at Remus.
“I’d like to rest for a few minutes. Have more hot chocolate, it’s freezing out here,” he replied, pushing his son gently towards Fleur and the thermos she was holding.
“Can you go with me, mummy?” he asked, turning to Tonks and ignoring Remus's advice.
She sighed.
“Sweetheart, mummy can’t go with you right now. Wait until your daddy’s finished,” she replied, adjusting Teddy’s hat and wiping his mouth.
“No, I really want to goooooo…”
“Me too!” piped Victoire, finally emerging from her cup.
“You will ‘ave to wait, both of you,” said Fleur, handing me a cup and kissing my cheek.
I pulled her closer to me and took a sip. Fleur’s hot chocolate was even better than my mum’s, not that I would ever tell her that. I emptied it and turned to Tonks.
“How come you’re not up for sledding today? Not what I was expecting from an Auror of your caliber,” I joked.
Tonks and Remus exchanged a quick look I recognised: they had a shared secret.
She shrugged.
“I’ve been a little sick lately,” she answered, trying to sound nonchalant. She wasn’t fooling anyone.
“You’re a terrible liar, but it’s your business,” I said, placing my cup onto the ground to re-join Victoire on our sled.
“Daddy, I want to start here now,” said my daughter. I squinted at her.
“Really? At the top? You think you’re ready?”
She nodded enthusiastically.
“All right then, princess. Let’s wait for your uncle Remus and Teddy to join us, we can all go at the same time,” I replied.
“Okay, daddy.”
“Congratulations,” I said quietly, offering Remus my hand, when him and Teddy joined us on their sled.
He shook it, beaming. There had been times when I thought things between him and Tonks wouldn't work out, but I was glad to have been wrong. What a difference a few years could make on a man... But they still wouldn't beat me and Victoire to the base of the hill, I thought as I pushed us down.
