Prompt: gilpin25's prompt #1: "Listen, no bloke in his right mind's going to fancy Tonks when Fleur's around." (Ron, HBP, Ch.5)
Summary: What it says on the tin.
Notes: You’re going to have to squint at the timeline a bit with me here. Let’s imagine there’s a time at the start of HPB that’s after Fleur arrives at the Burrow and Ron says the bit above, but before Tonks gets too depressed to change her appearance, even though we know that’s not exactly the order in which things happened…
Also, hey, I wrote my first drabble!
(And no, Remus doesn’t actually appear in this…but I’m also writing a longer story about Remus to the same prompt, so maybe you’ll forgive?)



Ron clattered into the kitchen for a snack, and stopped dead. “Tonks?”

The Order’s youngest member stood there in a midnight blue evening gown, her hair a deep chestnut brown piled high, a few wisps accentuating her heart-shaped face.

“Wotcher, Ron. Just stopped by to ask Molly’s advice, it’s this autumn ball thing at the Ministry – oh, drat…” She tugged impatiently at a wayward bit of flowing fabric.

Ron had never realised Tonks had… shoulders. And nice arms. And… nice other things.

Distantly, he heard Bill’s girlfriend behind him, saying, “Ron, you are in ze way, may I pass? Ron?”

Oh, this is hilarious! Serves Ron right, doesn't it. ;)

(If I remember correctly, he wasn't entirely unaffected when he had to share a broom with Tonks in DH, lol.)

I read that comment a few times, thinking broom was room, and I couldn't for the life of me remember anytime in DH that Ron and Tonks shared a room. Was it during the wedding? But why on earth would Tonks and Ron share a room? Then I finally saw the b, and it all made since.

Ha, you're right, he's rather affected by that broom ride, isn't he? Though I read that bit in DH more as "eek, another man's wife, actually, wait, my TEACHER'S wife" and less "attracted to Tonks specifically" – but yes, shows he's finally come around to registering Tonks as a fanciable woman :-)

Glad you enjoyed – especially since I was a little worried this fell too far out of the purview of a Remus/Tonks community! (Though it's expressing "more love" for Tonks as a character, right...?)

That was more or less my take on it, too -- not that Ron was attracted to Tonks any more than he would be to any other reasonably attractive woman, but rather that he registered that she was, in fact, potentially fanciable. And the whole 'my teacher is watching me hold on to his wife' part would only make poor Ron more embarrassed. ;)

I think since this fits in the timeline during Remus and Tonks's relationship, it's not shipping Tonks with anyone else (in your dreams, Ron, lol), and it's a drabble anyway, it seems fine to me. And you're right about the more love for Tonks part. ;)

Yes, I found that moment in DH says a lot, both about Ron and women, and also about how Ron is maybe not yet quite mature enough to realize that some kid having to share a broom with his wife for a bit for totally legitimate, Order-related reasons is really the *least* of Remus' concerns at the moment!

And there you've noticed more parallels than I did, because I didn't have any ulterior motives with the dress color or the brunette thing! I just thought that hair color and style would make her look elegant (and, not coincidentally, more like her mother!)

It's so Ron how he'd never realize she had shoulders - and then work down from there! Very funny and well observed. Now I want to read the fic about Remus seeing her in the same get up, along with your other planned one for this prompt... :D

I always thought he might have a bit of a thing for her, not only with the guilty glance at Remus in DH, but also with the pronouncement that she's OK-looking when she's not doing things to her hair and nose. He's obviously been having several good looks at her at some point to reach this decision. LOL.

Okay, you guys have convinced me! Perhaps the real story is that Ron finds Tonks attractive – but doesn't quite know what to do with that fact, since she doesn't fit into his teenaged image of what a fanciable girl is supposed to be like?

And I have no particular plans to write the Remus POV on this, but I totally encourage anyone else to do so!!
